SMA Solar Technology AG houdt zich bezig met de ontwikkeling, productie en verkoop van omvormers en monitoringsystemen voor zonne-energiesystemen. Het bedrijf opereert via de volgende segmenten: Residential, Commercial, Utility, Storage en Digital Energy. Het segment Residential richt zich op wereldwijde markten voor kleine fotovoltaïsche (PV) systemen met en zonder verbinding met een smart home oplossing. Het commerciële segment richt zich op wereldwijde markten voor middelgrote PV-systemen met en zonder energiebeheeroplossing. Het Utility segment richt zich op internationale markten voor PV-centrales met zijn krachtige string-omvormers in de sunny-high power productfamilie en de centrale omvormers in de sunny central productfamilie. Het Storage segment bestaat uit systeemtechnologie voor de integratie van batterij-opslagsystemen van alle systeemgroottes. Het segment Digital Energy bestaat uit coneva, dat digitale energiediensten ontwikkelt voor particuliere en zakelijke klanten, en emerce GmbH, dat zich bezighoudt met online verkoopkanalen voor geselecteerde markten. Het bedrijf werd in 1981 opgericht door Reiner Wettlaufer, Peter Drews, Werner Kleinkauf en Günther Cramer en het hoofdkantoor is gevestigd in Niestetal, Duitsland.
