Petróleo Brasileiro SA ist in den Bereichen Öl- und Gasexploration, -produktion und -vertrieb tätig. Das Unternehmen ist in den folgenden Segmenten tätig: Exploration und Produktion; Raffination, Transport und Marketing; und Gas und kohlenstoffarme Energien. Das Segment Exploration und Produktion umfasst die Aktivitäten der Exploration, Erschließung und Produktion von Rohöl, Flüssiggas und Erdgas, die in erster Linie der Versorgung der inländischen Raffinerien dienen. Das Segment Raffinerie, Transport und Marketing bezieht sich auf die Raffination, die Logistik, den Transport und den Handel mit Rohöl und Ölprodukten sowie den Export von Ethanol. Das Segment Gas und kohlenstoffarme Energien umfasst die Aktivitäten Logistik und Handel mit Erdgas und Elektrizität, Transport und Handel mit verflüssigtem Erdgas, Erzeugung von und Elektrizität durch thermoelektrische Kraftwerke sowie Beteiligungen an Transporteuren und Verteilern von Erdgas. Das Unternehmen wurde am 3. Oktober 1953 gegründet und hat seinen Hauptsitz in Rio de Janeiro, Brasilien.
