The S&P 500 Equal Weight index

The S&P 500 Equal Weight index is an equity index that tracks the performance of the 500 largest US companies. The key difference compared to the standard S&P 500 index is that all companies are weighted equally in the S&P 500 Equal Weight index. These equal weights are re-established on a quarterly basis by means of rebalancing. By contrast, in the conventional S&P 500 index, all companies are weighted according to their market capitalisation. The equal weighting of companies in the S&P 500 EW index reduces the impact of single major companies on the performance of the index. ETFs on the S&P 500 Equal Weight index are therefore a possible alternative for investors for whom the weighting of specific companies in the S&P 500 index is too high.

ETF investors can benefit from price gains and dividends of the S&P 500 Equal Weight constituents. Currently, the S&P 500 Equal Weight index is tracked by 7 ETFs.
