The Reinsurance segment is involved in all treaty reinsurance written on a risk-bearing basis within its underwriting operations. The Investing segment includes all investing activities related to its insurance operations. The Markel Ventures segment relates to controlling interests in a diverse portfolio of businesses that operate in various industries. The Other Insurance Operations segment refers to the results of its program services and insurance-linked securities businesses. The company was founded by Samuel A. Markel in 1930 and is headquartered in Glen Allen, VA.
